My name is Martin Speake and alongside my career in playing, composing and teaching music I developed a parallel interest in nutrition and health.
When I reflect on this I feel possibly there are two significant events in my life that influenced this. My father died before I was three years old of a second heart attack and I have no conscious memory of him. He was 38 years old and knowing what I know now concerning nutrition and lifestyle it is very likely to have been preventable.
The other important event was when my daughter was born in 1993. Bringing another human into the world made me aware of decisions that she couldn't make herself, what she would eat, would she be breastfed and for how long, would she sleep in our bed, would she be vaccinated, would childhood illnesses be treated by drugs or a natural approach with homeopathy, herbs and nutrition that enables the body to heal itself. I read many books on all these subjects and subscribed to the magazine What Doctors Don't Tell You, which was and still is a wonderful resource for alternative and scientifically researched views on almost every possible health issue.
I decided to take my interest further and I was lucky to study the unique teachings of Dr Lawrence Plaskett, who was the first in the UK to set up in 1982 a College training Nutritional Medicine Practitioners teaching a holistic naturopathic approach. I qualified in 2011.
I have a BSc in Nutritional Medicine from the University of West London and am a member of the Naturopathic Nutrition Association (NNA) and have public liability insurance.
